GRAND APARTMENT LIVING – A fine place to call home.

Apartment living doesn’t come much grander than this.

Motelands is a unique period apartment which was originally part of a mansion house built in 1862 by renowned architect WJ Barre, who designed many local iconic buildings and landmarks, including the Ulster Hall and Albert Clock.

The Moat House was thoughtfully converted into substantial individual apartments in 1938, all of which have been sympathetically restored in recent years to an extremely high standard.

The house itself has a rich history and was originally built for Thomas Valentine, a linen merchant and Westminster MP.

In 1900 it passed into the ownership of Sir Robert John McConnell, who was Lord Mayor of Belfast and later made Baronet by Queen Victoria.

Frank Workman then bought the property in 1907 and lived there until his death in 1936 — Workman Clark was Belfast’s smaller shipyard and even though it was known locally as ‘the wee yard’ it still employed over 10,000 people.

The McConnell family bought the house back after the 1930s depression and converted it into six apartments in 1938, which were redesigned and refurbished in 2008.

On entering what is still a very fine building the beauty of the original design is still very much apparent today and you can’t fail to be impressed by the hand-carved stone portico and grandiose communal staircase leading to the first floor apartments.

This really is a top-end conversion and you will be sold on it even before you enter the door of number eight which continues to make an impact with the tasteful way it has been finished and the space it offers.

There is an entrance hall with video intercom system and a cloakroom, plus access to a partially floored roof space.

The drawing room is an elegant space with corniced ceiling and two quaint arched windows which have been fitted with chic plantation shutters.

A stunning polished slate fireplace with cast iron inset and black granite hearth houses a living flame gas fire for instant warmth.

The kitchen stretches to almost 16 feet and offers an extensive range of solid oak high and low level units with glass display cabinets.

There is a built-in Baumatic under-bench stainless steel oven with matching four-ring gas hob, an integrated fridge freezer and a washer dryer.

Another arched window with wooden shutters makes a lovely feature and there is ample room for a dining table.

There are two good sized bedrooms with beautiful ornate corniced ceilings and the master comes with a full en suite bathroom.

More wooden shutters adorn the windows.

The en suite is fitted with a luxurious Waverley suite with a free-standing roll top claw foot bath and a fully tiled corner shower cubicle, pedestal wash hand basin and mirrored wall cabinet.

There is also a separate bathroom with white suite featuring a panelled bath with Bristan thermostatically controlled shower and glazed screen.

The apartment comes with generous communal car parking and gardens to the side in lawns with shrub beds.
