A major exhibition centre in the Titanic Quarter has finally been awarded planning permission, it can be revealed.
The Titanic Exhibition Centre – which is due to draw in thousands of visitors – was given the green light for an initial three-year term during a Belfast City Council planning committee last night.
It was awarded approval during a specially-convened sitting, after it had been deferred earlier this month.
The decision comes after the Belfast Telegraph revealed some of the city’s biggest and most lucrative trade shows are set to move from their former King’s Hall home to the new temporary conference centre.
The big annual shows – many of which draw more than 10,000 visitors – are due to relocate from the historic south Belfast site to the exhibition centre.
During an initial planning committee meeting earlier this month, a number of objections were raised over the building of the new centre, which included traffic concerns. It also included concerns over the “neighbour notification process”.
A committee application put to the council said: “An approval for three years is considered appropriate to allow sufficient flexibility to review infrastructure requirements and not prejudice the future development of the mixed use area.”
It’s set to host the Wedding Journal Show in September, Improve Your Home in October and the Holiday World expo.
